My Story

The founder of SHEpowHERs, & former founder and CEO of ADMED Communications, Sheena is an experienced and innovative media professional with direct experience managing traditional media and social media promotions, content creation, editing, ongoing marketing campaigns, and media and non-media events coordination. Sheena is also a Certified Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Trainer and Practitioner, a Plain Language expert, and a dynamic public speaker.  Her ability to actively engage her audience in thought-provoking dialogue, and in a fastidious manner, is refreshing, especially when discussing sensitive material.

A proud graduate of Lane College, a historically Black College/University (HBCU), Sheena received her B.A. in Mass Communications with an emphasis in Journalism and Public Relations and a minor in Criminal Justice. She also studied for a master’s in education at Mercer University and holds a Diversity and Inclusion Training certification from Cornell University.

Considering herself a commUnity servant (emphasis on “unity”), Sheena works tirelessly in minority-populated and underserved communities as a CASA, an independent volunteer, and a volunteer with various organizations. She is also currently a communications manager for an organization in Tennessee that advocates for people with disabilities. Sheena has a heart for single mothers, people who are homeless, living with disabilities, and in marginalized communities. Her mantra is, “When my people can’t stand on their own two feet, I carry them on my shoulders.”

Sheena is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, where she received the Outstanding EAF Member Award (2019). She is also a member of the Sundance Institute (Sundance Film Festival), the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), and the National Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

Sheena is a published author and poet, debuting the first book of her series, “Coco’s Diaries,” in 2022, and has published works in an anthology, and both audio and digital media.  She is also a former dance instructor for Nashville Community Education and The Hadley Park Line Dancers in Nashville.

Sheena is an Illinois native but has been a Southern transplant for over 30 years. However, it is not unusual to find her globetrotting around the world. In her free time, she likes to dance, paint, write poetry, and create innovative visual art and garden art pieces.  She is the only daughter of a very supportive mother and SHEpowHERs cofounder; has one talented younger brother, and is a supportive aunt, godmother, and mentor to several youths. She currently lives in the Nashville area with her loving husband and adorable teacup poodle, Princess. She also has two intelligent and creative adult sons, and two beautiful “glam girls” (granddaughters), who affectionally call her “Coco.”
